The normal values are:

pH          7.35-7.45

PaCO2   35-45 mm Hg

PaO2     80-95 mm Hg

HCO3     22-26 mEq/L

O2 Saturation    95-99%

BE           +/- 1

Compensation occurs as result of body’s effort to normalize the ph, both the PCO2 and HCO3 rise or decrease together to maintain a normal pH. Partially compensated occurs when the pH remains abnormal irrespective of the PCO2 and HCO3 rise or fall together. This indicates the body’s compensatory mechanism or attempts to regain a normal pH.
