The administration of the drug through GT tube should be done
only when the drug is in liquid or diluted form. Administrating
drugs in solid or uncrushed form may clog the tube and cause tube
blockage. The drug which is available in solid form should first be
crushed, diluted and then be administered to the patient through GT
tube. For this the nurse should check for "do not crush"
instruction provided on the drugs packet.
If the nurse sees "do not crush" instructions on the drug packet,
the nurse should not crush the drug. Crushing the drug may decrease
the drug effects or alleviate them. The nurse should immediately
call the pharmacy to check the drug's compatibility about crushing.
The nurse should ask the pharmacy if the drug is available in
liquid or diluted form so that it can be administered by GT
tube.
