Radioactive isotope, also called radioisotope, radionuclide, or radioactive nuclide, any of several species of the same chemical element with different masses whose nuclei are unstable and dissipate excess energy by spontaneously emitting radiation in the form of alpha, beta, and gamma rays.

Diagnostic uses:

  • Nuclear medicine: The branch of medice that deals with the diagnostic application of radioisotopes.
  • It uses tracer which emot gamma rays from within the body

Therapeutic uses:

  • Malignancy
  • Tumor tissues are attacked by beam of radiation
  • I- 131 used in thyriod cancer
  • Co-60 used in cervical cancer
  • Heavy particle Proton irradiation used in diabetic retinopathy to Improve vision
  • Au- 48 used in malignant plural & Peritoneal effusion.
