TOTAL PARENTERAL NUTRITION (TPN):-
- It is a method of getting nutrition into body through the
veins.

INDICATION:-
- TPN is used when individuals cannot get their nutrition through
eating.
1. Intestinal obstruction
2. Malabsorption or no absorption from small intestine.
3. IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease)
4. Pancreatitis
5. Severe burns
6. Major surgery
7. Chemotherapy
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS IN TPN:-
- TPN is prepared by sterile techniques.
- Normally, 2 L/day of the standard solution is needed.
- 4- 5 mg/kg/min of dextrose is given.
- 20 to 30% of total calories are usually supplied as lipids.
- lipid emulsions are often added to supply essential fatty acids
and triglycerides.
