The hypothalamic pitutary adrenal axis is our central stress response system.ACTH binds to receptors on the adrenal cortex and stimulates adrenal release of cortisol.In response to stressor ,cortisol will be released for several hours after encountering the stressor.The system works in a straight forward manner.This response is characterised by hypothalamic release of corticotropin releasing factor.CRF also known as CRH or corticotrophin hormone .When stress happens the cortisol will be relesed into the body at a certain concentraion of cortisol this protection is acheived by cortisol negative feedback to the hypothalamic relewase.The negative feedback loop taht operate in the hypothalamus pitutayry endocrine axis provide some insight into how the hypothalamus maintains the body internal environment.
