Peptic ulcer disease is ulceration of the mucosal wall of the oesophagus , stomach , pylorus and duodenum. When the client has peptic ulcer disease or altered gastrointestinal functioning , the nurse would expected a priority intervention to be inserting an IV. When the client has altered gastrointestinal functioning , keep the patient in nil per oral and start IV fluid replacement as prescribed.
Gastric and duodenal ulcers are common peptic ulcers. Severe ulceration in gastric ulcer leads to haematemesis. Ulceration in duodenum leads to malena. So monitor haemoglobin and PCV. Keeping the patient in NPO helps to reduce workload of gastrointestinal system. To maintain patient nutritional status , IV fluid is important . Other measures like antacids , bland diet , avoid caffeine products , stress reducing measures need to be taken to treat peptic ulcer.
