A client is prescribed to receive dacarbazine (DTIC-DOME) 250
mg/m2
The medication vial available has 500 mg of the medication to be reconstituted with 50 mL sterile water. The medication is then to be administered in 250 mL of D5W and infused over 60 minutes. Calculate the rate of flow in mL/hr for a client who weighs 70 kg and is 180 cm tall.
Answer.
Ordered dose= decarbazine 250mg/m2
Available dose= 500mg
Reconstituted with 50ml sterile water,
So 50ml= 500mg
1 ml= 10 mg.
Total height in meter square (m2) = 180/100=1.8 meter
Total dose required for a day = 250mg×1.8 meter
= 450mg
After reconstitution 1 ml contains 10 mg
The amount of diluted medicine to mix in 250ml D5W for infusion = 450mg/10mg
= 45
45 ml decarbazine to be mixed in 250ml D5W,so total 295ml for one day
So ml/ hr= 295ml/24hr
= 12.29 ml/ hr
