People who have chronic high blood pressure often have stiff and noncompliant arteries due to atherosclerosis. explain how this will affect the following: Blood flow through the arteries Left ventricular afterload

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Due to atherosclerosis, the blood vessels becomes narrow and increases the blood pressure. Blood flow through the arteries will be affected due to narrowing of the arteries. The plaque deposition makes the arteries stiff and noncompliant. This limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to organs and other parts of body. If the plaque becomes thicker it can block the arteries and cut off the blood flow. This increase in blood pressure raises left ventricle afterload and contributes to its hypertrophy.

A common cause of cardiovascular disease is atherosclerosis, the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to a buildup of plaque. For instance, significant narrowing in the coronary arteries, which bring oxygenated blood to the heart, can produce symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, and breathlessness. A person with high blood cholesterol has plaques that partially block several systemic arteries. This buildup can in turn lead to hypertension in the systemic circulation and an increased blood pressure in the aorta. In terms of afterload, explain how this condition can lead to a strain on the heart and decreased stroke volume, especially in the left ventricle.

Of all people in one population, 21% have high blood pressure and 36% are overweight. In addition, 42% of people who are overweight also have high blood pressure. Let H represent the event that a person has high blood pressure, and O represent the event that a person is overweight. In each part of this question, you must first express each probability in terms of the events H and O and justify any computation through the use of a formula....

The average systolic blood pressure was found to be 140 mm for people who have high responsibility jobs, specifically investment banking jobs. Heart attack is the leading cause of death in the US, and the American Medical Association (AMA) deems average systolic blood pressure of 140 mm as very high. The fitness instructors and AMA doctors recommend practicing Yoga. They believe that practicing yoga reduces blood pressure and hence is beneficial to people. To test this claim, a sample of...

Salt-free diets are often prescribed to people with high blood pressure. Eight volunteers participated in a study. Data was obtained from the experiment which was designed to estimate the reduction in diastolic blood pressure as a result of following a salt-free diet for two weeks. Assume diastolic readings are normally distributed.  The resulting mean difference is 1.25mmHg with a standard deviation of 2.4928mmHg.  Construct a 98% confidence interval for the mean reduction in the diastolic reading after two weeks on this diet....
