If the emergency is life-threatening, it requires immediate medical assessment, activation of the emergency medical service (EMS) or referral to the concerned physician if available. The patient must be observed for the signs of shock, stroke and heart attack depending on the signs and symptoms and background of the emergency. The Heimlich maneuver is performed if the patient has airway obstruction.
