1) Loperamide, episodic use of antispasmodics, peppermint oil and diet manipulation are found to be the first line treatment for IBS.
Loperamide is an anti motility drug and thus decrease peristaltic movement and increase intestinal water absorption. Studies has shown that it improves diarrhoea symptoms in a short time when compared with other drugs. It is reported to have improved global symptoms.
2) Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative. This medication have side effects like diarrhoea, stomach upset, vomiting and stomach cramps. There is a chance of worsening the patient conditions while having this drug. So it is said that bisacodyl is not recommended for the patient with IBS.
