Describe how blood glucose levels are regulated in normal health.

Describe how blood glucose levels are regulated in normal health.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: The blood glucose level is maintained by the endocrine gland. The pancreas have cells known as islet cells. The alpha cells of islet cells produces glucagon where as beta cells produces insulin. The insulin adjuts the excessive glucose level in the blood and store it.The pancreas releases insulin according to the blood glucose level in the body. If the glucose level is too low, the insulin release decreases. The glucagon also plays major role as it gives instructions to the liver to convert the glycogen in to glucose when the blood sugar level is too low.

When red blood cell (RBC) hemoglobin is exposed to high blood glucose levels, it becomes glycated. The hemoglobin A1c test measures the percentage of glycated red blood cells in whole blood as an indicator of blood glucose levels over the 90-day lifespan of an RBC. Hemoglobin A1c levels between 4% and 5.9% are considered normal. A1c levels are well correlated with average blood glucose levels. An A1c level of 6% (minimal for a diagnosis of diabetes) is equivalent to an...
