Mycoplasma pneumoniae includes the following steps of pathogenesis:
1.Adhesion:They gets attached to the respiratory mucosa with the help of membrane bound adhesion proteins.
2.Induce injury to host respiratory tissue:This injury is mediated by- Hydrogen peroxide,cytotoxin and lipoproteins.
Upper respiratory tract infections manifest as pharyngitis,tracheobronchitis or rarely otitis media.Acute onset and 20 times more common in pneumoniae.
Lower respiratory tract infection leads to Atypical ppneumoniae characterised by wheezing,dry cough and peribronchial pneumoniae with thickened bronchial marking and streaks of interstitial infiltration on x ray.
TREATMENT: Macrolides are drugs of choice(oral azithromycin 500 mg on day 1 ,250 mg on day 2 to 5)
Alternative drug include: doxycycline and respiratory fluroquinolones.
