Your patient has a diagnosis of proteinuria. The patient is 12 years old and appears in good health. Symptoms have been present for approximately one week. The mother states she noticed her son’s legs are swollen, and he has had a sore throat for at least three weeks. What would you expect in this patient’s blood test and why?
When going through the case, it definitely looks like a case of Poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis followed by proteinuria. Proteinuria is a condition when a greater volume of protein than usual passes through the urine. In proteinuria cases, different urine test are conducted usually. But here the blood test has been conducted to evaluate the kidney function(Since kidney is an important part of the whole urinary function of human body). In this patient’s blood test, we can expect increased level of urea and creatinine in the blood (since the kidney are not moving them from blood to urine). If there is a little prograssive damage in the kidney, a reduction in the eGFR rate can be expected. Low level of albumin(major protein in blood serum) can also be expected as most of them are leaked through the urine.
