Ways in which a Dietician can specifically contribute to the treatment of a patient who has been diagnosed with the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease include taking care of the diet of the patient should monitor calories as the American Lung Association recommends people with COPD to keep close tabs on their weight. Having a varied diet that provides a good balance of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. The nutritionist should determine the amount of protein in the diet as the focus should be on more proteins. Limiting salt retention and use supplemental oxygen during and after meals for reducing the shortness of breath when eating.
