Ruben has been in the intensive care unit since his hospital admission two days ago. He is on a ventilator to assist with his breathing and the physician has placed a central line for administration of parenteral nutrition support. The nursing staff weighs Ruben daily; his current weight is 168 lbs. The damaging effects of the burns have elicited the stress response in Ruben's body, and his cortisol levels have been elevated since the injury. Because Ruben's recovery will be extensive, he is at increased risk of what effects of prolonged elevated cortisol?

Ruben Garcia is at increased risk of protein degradation, Because these client had been experienced severe burn, due to this condition his stress level and the corresponding hormone of cortisol level had been increased very high. One of the major things that to be noted down while increase in the cortisol level would be the protein synthesis inhibition. The increase of these hormone level will affect the metabolism of these molecules. Therefore these client is at the risk of protein degradation.
