Drug Z 12.5 mg/kg is recommended for administration over a 60 min period by IV infusion in NS. How many milliliters, of a vial containing 4 g of Drug Z in 15 mL should be added to a 250-mL bag of NS in treating a 154 lb patient

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Recommended dose is 12.5 mg/kg for administration over a 60 min period by IV infusion in NS.

For 154 lb patient, the amount of drug required to administer the recommended dose can be calculated as:

Since, 1 lb = 0.453 kg

Therefore, for 154 lb = 154 x 0.454

= 69.9 kg

~ 70 kg approx...

So the weight of patient in Kg is 70 kg

And since the dose is 12.5 mg/kg,

Therefore for 70 kg body weight, the amount of drug required will be calculated as:

Since, 1 kg = 12.5 mg

so, 70 kg = 70 x 12.5 mg drug

= 875 mg drug required for 70 kg patient.

Now, vial contains 4 g of drug in 15 mL.

It means 4000 mg of drug is in 15 mL

For, 875 mg drug, the volume from the vial to be drawn can be calculated as:

Since, 4000 mg = 15 mL

So, 875 mg = (875 x 15)/4000 mL

= 3.28 mL

Hence, 3.28 mL from vial of 4 g of Drug Z in 15 mL, is to be added to a 250 mL bag of NS in treating a 154 lb patient.
