The optimal postion for gas exchange after pneumonectomy is a lateral position, with the remaining lung in the uppermost position.

  • The side-lying position is adopted for draining the remaining lung, the patient should be positioned carefully on the operated side, because if patient lies on the non-operated side, the bronchial stump may be bathed with fluid if the anastomosis is not well sutured.
  • Facilitate improvements in hemodynamics
