Answer #1

Alveolar minute ventilation

Alveolar ventilation is the amount of gas that enter alveoli per min.

It can be calculated by the following formula

Alveolar ventilation = ( tidal volume_ dead space ) × respiratory rate

Here,

Tidal volume=350ml / breath

Dead space=200 ml/ breath

Respiratory rate=18 bt/ min

So

Alveolar ventilation ( VA) = (tidal volume _ dead space)× respiratory rate

VA=( 350 ml/ breath _200 ml/ breath )× 18 breath/ min

VA= 50ml/ breath × 18 breath/ min = 2700ml/ min

Now convert ml/ min to liter/ min by dividing by 1000

2700ml/ min ÷ 1000= 2.7 L/ min

Brief Patient History Mr. A is an 18-year-old 80-kg African American man admitted to the intensive care unit after emergency surgery for gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The surgical procedure was extensive and involved repair of a perforated bowel, splenectomy, and hemostasis. Mr. A’s mean arterial pressure (MAP) dropped below 65 mm Hg during resuscitation, and he received 9 units of packed red blood cells and 4 L of lactated Ringer solution intravenously (IV) to achieve hemodynamic stability. MANAGE THIS PATIENT OBJECTIVE: Provide initial ventilator settings from the guidelines for patient management for any of the following patient conditions: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A 65-year-old man with a history of COPD is brought to the emergency department (ED) complaining of severe shortness of breath. The following information was obtained during an initial patient assessment. The SpO2 of 75% obtained while he was breathing room air is very low. Because pulse oximetry may be inaccurate in this range,...
