Answer #1

Abdominal thrusts or Heimlich manoeuvre is used to treat choking by foreign objects and thereby clearing the airway.A person who chokes is unable to speak or make any sound. The universal sign of choking is that the person who is unable to breathe will hold his own throat to seek attention from others. This technique is performed when the person is responsive and is contraindicated in infants as this could damage their internal organs.

Technique:

  • Stand behind the affected person and put your arms around their upper abdomen.
  • The rescuer makes a fist with one hand
  • The thumb side of the fist is put slightly above the bellybutton and below the breastbone
  • The fist is grasped with other hand and quick upward thrusts are given into the abdomen
  • The thrusts are given until the object comes out and he can breathe, cough ,talk or until he sops responding.
