The hazards in the healthcare setting are:
• Infections
• Hazardous chemicals
• Stress
• Slips and falls
• Latex allergy
• Physical strain
• Needle sticks injury
Physical strain:
One of the biggest risk to the nurses are physical strain because
they stand on their feet for longer hours, lifting and shifting
patients and heavy equipment. All these causes back pain and
injury. Poor posture when giving care to patient causes strain on
their neck, shoulders and back.
Measures to be taken to avoid these hazards are:
• Use proper techniques while lifting and transferring patients.
For example use knees and not back.
• Wear comfortable shoes specially designed for prolonged standing
and walking.
• Maintain strength and flexibility of muscles
• Keep equipment and patients close to midline of body while
lifting and bend from back.
