Alison is a 19-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with severe abdominal pain and vomiting and was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. She was administered 10 mg morphine IV and taken directly to theatre for emergency surgery. Following laparoscopic removal of her left ovary she has been transferred to the post-anaesthetic recovery unit (PARU). Alison is in a supine position and remains drowsy but responsive to verbal commands. She has the following:

  • 3 small incisions on his abdomen which have been covered with an occlusive dressing
  • Intravenous fluids at 84 mls/hr
  • Oxygen via a face mask at 10L/min
  • Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) containing Morphine to be commenced on the ward

To determine whether the education was effective or not the nurse can assess the patient's response. Through her response, we can understand how effective education is. If the patient understood PCA we can see that the patient itself operating the equipment based upon his severity of pain. If she is able to use properly, even though she is drowsy she asks doubts regarding the uses.Once she is awake, her facial expression itself would tell us how effective is PCA.she would be able to control her pain and shoe feels satisfied
