Answer: Mediastinum is an anatomic region located between the lungs that include all the principal tissues and organs of the chest except the lungs. It is a division of the thoracic cavity. It contains structures like thymus gland, oesophagus, trachea, and heart. It extends from the breastbone to the vertebral column and is bounded laterally by the pericardium. The mediastinum is divided into two major structure called the superior and inferior mediastinum. The inferior mediastinum is larger and is further divided into the anterior, middle, and posterior mediastinum.
