2) Independant variable : naps during night shift (Cause)

Dependant variables : behaviour, productivity and job satisfaction (effect)

Extraneous variables: Variables that may affect the dependent variable from (outside study variables)

duration of shift, age, patient load

Following are examples of measures to control the extraneous variables

duration of shift: recruit subjects from units having the same shift duration

age : study nurses in strata of different age groups / or have a fixed age criteria for inclusion

patient load : Measure patient load and recruit subjects during similar patient load/ flow/ work load only (fix the inclusion criteria)
