Crossover design is a special design in which each experimental unit receives a sequence of experimental treatments.Crossover designs are common for experiments in many scientific disciplines like psychology, pharmaceutical science, and medicine.In cross over design patient receives   a sequence of two or more treatments, of which one may be a standard treatment or a placebo.

Advantages:

  • Each subject acts as his or her own control.
  • Smaller number of patients are required in comparing with parallel group studies.

Disadvantages

  • crossover studies need a washout period between study phases.
  • Crossover studies have an order effects,as the drug given order can make changes in the results
