The musculoskeletal related changes in an older adult is osteoarthritis which has an impact on the health status.
Osteoarthritis is the breakdown and loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. As the individual ages the water protein on the cartilage degenerates and the cartilage starts to degenerate by flaking and forming tiny cracks. Repetitive use of the joints irritates the cartilage causing joint pain.
Nursing intervention:
• Apply hot or cold packs
• Change position frequently
• Eliminate stressors
• Administer pain medication
• Provide adequate rest
• Support joint
• Use supportive measures
• Advice client to do active ROM and passive exercises.
