When the subjects, groups or data is selected for the analysis is not randomly selected it leads to the selection bias which forms a non-representative sample of the given population. When subjects for the "control" group are not truly representative of the population that produced the cases it is an example of a

case-control study selection bias occurs. For example, if we are studying the risk of developing lung cancer amongst the smokers when the subjects for the "control" group are not truly representative of the population it is an example of selection bias.
