CASE STUDY
Maria is 32-years-old with two health children, and she was
recently displaced from her apartment due to lack of payment. Maria
has a complex medical history of HIV, contracted in utero. Maria
has always have a difficult time holding down a job due to poorly
manage viral loads and illnesses related to the HIV. Maria is non-
compliant with her medicine, but she states that her non-
compliance is due to lack of resources. Maria and her children are
now homeless. They have been staying at their local homeless
shelter. The children are due to register for kindergarten;
however, they do not have any documentation immunizations or visit
to a pediatrician or a dentist, which are all requirements for
admission to the local elementary school. Maria is embarrassed of
their situation and has decided not to enroll the children in
school.
Regardingless of the type of health care system
available, one recurrent issue is assess to health care for
underdeserved populations. for this discussion, underdeserved
populations includes minority and immigrants groups the pediatric
population, and women. these groups are consistently underdeserved
worldwide in health care. has previously studied in Module 1
&2, we learned that according to the ANA, the nurse must care
for the people regardless of social, economic status, or nature of
health problems. also the nurse must promote effort to meet and
national health care needs. serving the underdeserved populations
is the duty of the nurse. Read the following three senerios and

- Educate the people regarding the importance of living a healthy life by proper vaccination, healthy diet, and exercise
- Educate that vaccination is given by the government free of cost, and the importance of vaccination in the prevention of disease.
- Explained all the health facilities provided by the government for the underserved people.
- Planned for a screening program of common diseases among the people
- Refer to the hospital if needed.
