Explain how cigarette smoking impacts the lungs at the physiologic level.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The cigarette smoking impacts the lungs at the physiologic level;

The cells producing mucus in our lungs and airways grow in size and number leading to an increase in the amount of mucus.

The cilia clean our lungs. The cilia slow down after we start smoking a cigarette. Smoking reduces the number of cilia, so few cilia are left clean your lungs.

The mucus clogs our airways as it stays in our airways. The extra mucus gets easily infected.

As our lungs and airways get irritated and inflamed, they become narrow and this reduces the air flow.

When the tissues of the lung are destroyed, the number of air spaces and blood vessels in the lungs decreases. This leads to less supply of oxygen in our body.

Cigarette smoke has carcinogens that can make normal cells change into cancer cells.

Studies have shown that states with higher cigarette taxes have lower rates of teenage smoking. But subsequent studies that excluded the states of North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia found no significant relationship between the tax on cigarettes and the incidence of teenage smoking. Can you think of a plausible explanation? Why is there no significant difference in the incidence of teenage smoking between high-tax and low-tax states when North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia are excluded from the study? Please explain.

Cigarette Smoking A researcher found that a cigarette smoker smokes on average 31 cigarettes a day. She feels that this average is too high. She selected a random sample of 10 smokers and found that the mean number of cigarettes they smoked per day was 28. The sample standard deviation was 2.7. At a=0.05, is there enough evidence to support her claim? Assume that the population is approximately normally distributed. Use the P-value method and tables. Compute the test value....

You are trying to estimate the impact of cigarette taxes on smoking rates by comparing across European countries. You estimate the equation log(smoke) =β +β log(VAT_cig) +u i01 i where smokei are the number of smokers per 100,000 population in country i and V AT _cigi is the VAT on cigarettes in that country. (a) Interpret the parameter β1. You suspect that taxes on alcohol, VAT_alci, which are positively correlated with cigarette taxes, may be an important confound. (b) Write...
