Embroyonic stem cell research is used to replace or restore tissues that are damaged due to disease or injury. It occurs usually in disease conditions like diabetes, heart attack, parkinsonism, spinal cord injury etc.

Yes the catholic church is againist some forms of embryonic cell research that includes the destruction of the human embryos. Its unethical as it destroys the blastocyst, the unimplanted human embryo at its 6th or 8th day. In contrast church is not against adult stem cell research as it doesnt include human embryonic stem cells.
