Active listening is an important element of therapeutic communication. Practice your active listening skills by pretending that a statement was made to you, the HCW. Using one of the five phrases at the end of the directions, complete the following assignment on the Therapeutic Communications.
Instructions
1. Rephrase the message for verification by the pt., using any of
the nine methods of active listening mentioned in the Lecture.
(Make sure you use one of the Nine Methods of Active Listening, not
one of the 5 Levels of Listening! – preferably not the method of
silence.
2. Tell us what method(s) you are using.
3. After you have verified the message, compose a therapeutic response or answer to the pt.
Statements/Scenarios
1. Miss Royal tells you, "I don't know what to do. My dad has been
prescribed so many pills he can't remember which is the right one,
so he ends up refusing to take any of them."
2. Mr. Notaclue is at your front desk, "I can't give you my insurance card; I lost it, and I don't remember the exact name of the company either. But you've always taken care of it before."
3. Mrs. Worrier is in your clinic/pharmacy, "I can't help being anxious. The Dr. just suggested a referral for tx at the hospital where that lady had the wrong foot removed last year. What do you think?"
4. Ms. Kerns is in for a lab test, "I feel dizzy just thinking about having my blood taken. Do you really need to do it?"
5. You are helping Mrs. Smith, an elderly female patient dress,
the patient states, “With my arthritis, I can’t tie my own shoes
anymore. Getting old is not fun.”
6. Mr. Matthews tells you, “My heart pain gets worse after I shovel
snow at work. Now at work it also hurts my back to lift boxes up to
the high shelf. My brother’s heart bothers him too, but he had
problems since he was a baby. He smokes and drinks too much. I
noticed my heart started hurting last summer when I was mowing my
lawn. My back was fine then. In October, I was in a car accident
that made my back hurt.
7. Your elderly patient holds tightly to an amulet, or charm during
a painful procedure. She asks if she may take it with her during
surgery.
1," I understand you are dad confused with his prescribed pills,
shall I give a suggestion that helps your dad to remember the
prescribed pills in order to take?"(asking the open-ended
question)
2, "so, you want us to provide new insurance card with old card
details?"(paraphrasing)
3," I am so sorry you are dealing with this problem, lets find some
ways I can help"(empathy)
