The visual examination of the sigmoid colon procedure is called colonoscopy.The colonoscope is a four-foot long, flexible tube about the thickness of a finger with a camera and a source of light at its tip to view large bowel and distal part of small bowel through rectum.

The indications for colonoscopy are changes in bowel habits, bleeding from anus, diarrhea,weight loss. It serves as a screening tool for individuals with a family history of colon cancer, a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease,a long-lasting disorder that causes irritation and sores in the GI tract or other risk factors for colon cancer.
