Pablo Picasso's Don Quixote is a well-known sketch of Spanish literary hero Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza from the much-adored Spanish novel of Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote de la Mancha. The novel was published in two parts and is the story of a tragicomic middle-aged gentleman Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza with whom the hero sets out on his horse for an adventure. It describes what befalls a knight who is aging but is bemused by chivalric romances sets out for an adventure. Pablo Picasso’ sketch was a canvas oil painting of Don Quixote de la Mancha and his sidekick, Sancho Panza, from this work of Spanish literature. Picasso’s sketch had Don Quixote on a horse, his squire Sancho Panza on a donkey, four windmills, and the sun. Picasso explained that he chose the subject to personify the great struggle a pilot had during the war.
