Damian is a 21-year-old soccer player at the local University in town. He comes into the urgent care immediately after he sustained an injury to his right ankle during the game earlier today. He reports he “twisted” it and fell onto the ground after he stepped onto someone else’s foot. He reports that his ankle immediately began to swell and he was unable to bear any weight secondary to pain.
On examination, pulses are intact and his foot appears to be well perfused. He does have significant tenderness over the lateral malleolus and an x-ray is ordered. X-ray of the ankle is found negative for any fracture and Damian is told he has 3rd-degree ankle sprain. Instructions for (RICE) Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation are stressed to the patient and he is told that it will help his recovery. Damian asks how long it will be until he can return to play, the regional championship is just 10 days away.
Discussion 12.1:
Clearly identify the anticipated time frames for Damian’s recovery. Will he be healed in time to safely play in the regional championship?
What are the physiologic mechanisms involved in a musculoskeletal injury? Describe how the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) method is an effective treatment for musculoskeletal injuries at the pathophysiologic level?
Muscle pain and muscle pull offen happen when lot of pressure is put on muscle . Treatment option vary depending on the severity of strain,RICE is usually very helpful.
REST-Rest is a key compenent of reparing the body, without rest continue strain leading to increased pain and inflammation rest is necessary 24-48 hrs after injury
ICE-ice is reduce the pain and inflammatory response which associated with heat genrated by increased blood flow and blood loss. apply of ice 20min of each hour
COMPRESSION-Compression aiims to reduce the edematous swelling that result from inflammatory process.
ELEVATION-elevation aiims to reduce swelling by increasing venous return of blood to the systemic circulation.
Damians need 2week to his recovery .He will not able to participate in the regional chmpionship
