MCC: Major complications and comborbidties.
For the purpose of coding diagnoses on claim, a complication is a condition that arises during the hospital stay that prolongs the length of stay. A Comborbitity is a pre existing condition that affects the treatment recieved and/ or prolongs the length of stay.
The presence of major complication or comborbidity (MCC), generally is representative of a patient that requiers more resources; therefore, hospitals are paid more to care for these patients.
