Introduction to type 2 diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a clinical syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia.

In type 2 diabetes mellitus, variable degrees of impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance and increased glucose production. It may also occur due to genetic or metabolic syndromes.

Autoimmune etiology is not found in type 2 diabetes, no HLA relationship has been identified.

Genetic influence is more pronounced in type 2 diabetes.

Pancreatic beta cell mass is intact in type 2 diabetes, as compared to type 1 where autoimmune destruction takes place.
