SUCTIONING A PATIENT WITH AN ENDOTRACHEAL TUBE:-
(i) INDICATION:- when patient is unable to mobilize their
secretions, Someone should suction secretions from the trachea to
maintain a patent airway.
(ii) PROCEDURE:-
-firstly, hyperoxygenate the patient by giving him a few breaths
with 100 percent oxygen.
- Insert the lubricated catheter through the nose or endotracheal
tube.
- After the catheter has been inserted to appropriate depth, apply
intermittent suction and slowly withdraw the catheter, using a
twirling motion.
- during suctioning, monitor oxygen levels and heart rate.
- Suctioning attempts should be limited to 10 seconds.
