Respiratory failure occurs when the normal exchange of oxygen and carbondioxide between the blood and atmosphere fails to meet the needs of metabolism. Dut to the failure, metabolic demands for oxygen and body system acid-base stabilization are not maintained and leads to perfusion mismatch. As a result of oxygen exchange failure, severe hypoxemia develops with or without hypercarbia, cellular anoxia and tissue asphyxia.

Respiratory failure occurs in conditions like fluid filled/collapsed alveolar spaces, pulmonary embolism, emphysema, trauma, fibrosis, pneumonia.
