Describe what the following drug does and when you want to prescribe it: B1 Receptor Blockers.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Beta 1 receptors are found in heart and kidney. B1 antagonist exert their effect by binding to beta 1 receptor site selectively and inhibit the action of epinephrine and non epinephrine in this site. They will block the adrenergic response resulting in decreased contractility and heart rate, increased relaxation and decreased cardiac conduction times.

They are prescribed by the doctors in patient with hypertension, chronic stable angina, heart failure, post myocardial infarction, and decreased left ventricular function after a recent myocardial infarction. Otheruses include prophylaxis of migraine, treatment of arrhythmia and anxiety.
