ACHILLES TENDON

Achilles tendon is a tough band of fibrous tissue that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It is also called calcaneal tendon. The gastroenemins and soleces muscle unite into one band of tissue, which becomes the Achilles tendon at the lower end of the calf. It is the largest and strongest tendon in the body.

Achilles tendon rupture:-

A complete rupture of Achilles tendon may make a pop sound followed by pain and swelling of the lower leg. Testing an Achilles tendon rupture requires surgery or long term immobilization of the ankle.

Cause:-

  • Increased intensity of sports participation
  • Stepping into hole
  • Falling from heights

Risk factors:-

  • Age
  • Sex
  • Recreational sports
  • Steroid injection
  • Certain antibiotics ( includes ciprofloxin, levofloxin,)
  • Obesity.
