The Agency's official designation as the Federal lead in patient
safety began when the Healthcare Research and Quality Act of 1999
was signed into law. It required AHRQ to "conduct and support
research and build private-public partnerships to:
(a) identify the causes of preventable health care errors and
patient injury in health care delivery.
(b) develop, demonstrate, and evaluate strategies for reducing
errors and improving patient safety
(c) disseminate such effective strategies throughout the health
care industry.
(d) Educate and train health care professionals about the emerging
patient safety concepts, findings, and ways to disseminate the new
information.
