What is the difference between a phenotype and a genotype? Is blood bank testing normally concerned with determining genotype or phenotype?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Genotype are genes responsible for a particular trait. It depends upon with the hereditary information given to a person by his parents .it is inherited and has all the hereditary information of an individual though it is not expressed.whereas phenotype is the physical characteristics of that particular trait such as hair colour and is entirely depend upon the environmental influences as well as genotype. It contains expressed genes and cannot be inherited.

Phenotyping is used in blood banking Inorder to identify donors carrying uncommon phenotypes,to determine compatibility for a patient with an allo antibody.

It is used in patients to prevent future antibody formation and understand which antigens the patient lacks.it helps to confirm that the antigen is negative fora patient which he has formed an antibody in the body.
