Q. 1a: Is syrup a favorable vehicle for lipophilic drugs? Why or Why not?

1b: Name five common preservatives used in oral liquids.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. Lipophilic drugs contains chemical compound which has ability to dissolve in fats, oils, lipids and non-polar solvents like toluene or hexane

For lipophilic drugs, syrup is not a favorable vehicle. Because, basically syrup is made of sugars and it is water soluble. So a liquid lipophilic drug would not distribute loosely. For dissolve/disperse, fat solution is needed for the drug

2. Five common preservatives

- Benzoic acid and salts

- Sorbic acid and salts

- Parabens: group of alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid like ethyl, methyl, propylene, butyl

- Sodium benzoate

- Potassium sorbate
