How can data collection for notifiable diseases be improved?
Under the Health Act 1956 and the Tuberculosis Act 1948, health professionals inform their local Medical Officer of Health of any suspected or diagnosed notifiable disease. Laboratories have to report notifiable diseases to their local Medical Officer of Health since December 2007.
Via a secure web-based portal notifiable disease data is reported to the Medical Officer of Health at each public health unit (PHU) is entered into the EpiSurv national database. On behalf of the Ministry of Health, the near real-time data is collated and analyzed by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd (ESR).
