5. Describe ways to prevent NMS.

NMS i.e. neuroleptic malignant syndrome which can be prevented in many ways such as avoiding dehydration, as much possible keep the patient hydrated, and should not be empty stomach and the use and dose of antipsychotic medication should be minimized and agitation treated.

i) Using the lowest effective dose of antipsychotic medication

ii) Avoiding rapid escalation of antipsychotic medication dosing if possible

iii) Avoiding abrupt withdrawal of dopaminergic drugs, especially in compromised patients (e.g., Parkinson disease)

iv) Treating agitation early, using alternatives to antipsychotic medication (e.g., lorazepam) when possible
