The process standard of competence refers to the ability of a patient to make the treatment choice after acquiring sufficient knowledge and understand the different parameters regards to that treatment. He must have adequate capacity to deliberate all procedures involved in that treatment. There are many advantages and disadvantages associated with this process.
Advantage
If the patient is deemed competent enough, he can make autonomous treatment decisions that can be very beneficial both physically and financially. Besides, he can test the effectiveness of each and every step involved in the treatments and can make changes if required.
Disadvantage
If the patient is taking high-risk treatment decisions without proper knowledge regarding the treatment, it can end up inlife-threatening medical situations.
