Read the statement below and reflect on your experiences of engaging in a community health initiative. What barriers have you experienced, what information were you able to obtain about the process of making a change in a system? How do you feel about what you have learned about yourself, your strengths and potential for future growth?

“Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service-learning combines service objectives and learning objectives with the intent that the activity will change both the recipient and the provider of the service. Research has shown that students engaged in service-learning showed an increase in the degree to which they felt aware of community needs, believed they could make a difference, and were committed to service in the future,8and communities involved in service-learning have shown decreased numbers of people engaging in risky behaviors.

The changes in the provider occur through the combination of service tasks and structured opportunities that link the service task to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content” (Buckner, Ndjakani, Banks & Blumenthal, 2014)

  • Lack of involvement.
  • Lack of proper planning.
  • Gap of communication
  • Poor co- ordination.
  • Lack of interest.

For implementation of change process it is important to have planned process, evaluation as well analysis of the programs should be achieved. By enhancing the learning skills and encourage team work. To establish change process, leadership qualities are important to encourage and motivate the participants.
