Usually the hormones come under 2 main groups and they are steroid and nonsteroid hormones.These 2 categories of hormones perform their function very differently on a target cell.The steroid hormones are made from the lipid (cholesterol) and the nonsteroid hormones involves the minor peptides,modified aminoacids and proteins.

The non-steroid hormones are produced of aminoacids and these non-steroid hormones are not fat-soluble.Because of its non-solubility,they are not able to diffuse beyond the plasma membrane of the target cells.Rather,normally the nonsteroid hormones bond to the receptor present on cell membrane.Almost every endocrine hormones are said to be non-steroid hormones and which involves the insulin and thyroid hormones.
