reply in 200 words In this week's forum discussion, we were asked to consider a medical term related to the reproductive system that we may have seen on TV or during other daily activities. Conveniently so, I saw a commercial for an Intrauterine device. Easily enough, with what I have learned in this course, I was able to break down the term "intrauterine device" as a device working within the uterus. The company that was selling the intrauterine device was, Mirena. This is related to the reproductive system because, as an intrauterine device, it prevents pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourse, as well as prevention as a secondary mean, when another birth control intervention has failed. The website shows that there is a 99% prevention rate using while using their intrauterine device. The device itself releases a hormone known as levonorgestrel, which falls under the class of medications known as progestin. The way levonorgestrel works is, it releases the hormone which does not allow the ovaries to release it's eggs, as well as not allowing sperm to fertilize with the eggs. Mirena's intrauterine device release the levonorgestrel hormone for up to five years. Although it has a high chance of preventing pregnancies, it still does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Mirena also notes that there is a 1% chance of infection when using this device, one of these infections is PID, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. If I recall correctly, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease can become fatal if untreated. The infection begins at the female's reproductive system, and if left untreated, can spread to other systems and cause further infection. I recall learning that Pelvic Inflammatory Disease can be exacerbated because patients will refuse to be seen by medical professionals because they are either too embarrassed to have an infection, or because they believe that the symptoms will cure themselves. As the birds and the bees go for the adults, it is always best to utilize protection when being sexually active.
