What is used to describe the effect of drugs in disease progression models? 1. Symptomatic benefit models 2. Square root models or 3. Drug interaction models?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Disease progression modeling involves the utilization of mathematical functions as quantitative descriptors of the time course of disease status. Disease models may incorporate biomarkers ofdisease severity and/or clinical outcomes to characterize the natural progression of disease.

Symptomatic benefits model is the clinical benefit response as the disease progresses overtime which is used to describe the effects of drug used for the disease.

Example: Few reports on use of symptomatic benefits as an alternative or adjunctive for the assessment of objective response in chemotherapy of the advanced cancer.

There are a number of drugs in clinical development that bind to LFA-1 and modulate its interaction with ICAM-1. These drugs do not prevent the binding of LFA-1 to ICAM, but rather increase the dissociation rate of LFA-1 from ICAM-1 (i.e. make LFA-1 fall off of ICAM-1 faster). What effect would such a drug have on T-cell function? Speculate for what conditions/pathologies this drug might be beneficial. Explain
