A 56 year old man has developed a community-acquired skin infections that is shown to be methicillin resistant S.aureus. An infectious disease consultant recommends initial treatment with doxycycline.
Another consultant has recommended chloramphenicol and before that was doxycycline. Is this a good choice?
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus is a bacteria which is resistant to numerous antibiotics.
*** Doxycycline belongs to tetracycline antibiotic group.
*Doxycycline has shown to be very effective agent against Community Acquired MRSA.
* Chloramphenicol is a good choice of treatment for Community Acquired Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. It has shown good in vitro ( in lab)activity against MRSA.
* Chloramphenicol is a good alternative for newer expensive antimicrobials: like vancomycin, clindamycin etc: in resource limited countries or for economically back population because it is not expensive.
SO THE RECOMMENDED TREATMENT WITH CHLORAMPHENICOL IS A GOOD CHOICE.
